Everything Begins Somewhere

My kids got me involved with tumblr. My first post was June 21, 2008. Blogging has turned out to be very interesting. I particularly like spontaneous posting of photos from my phone. Slowly I am building up people I am following. I'm not very interested in current music, movies or pop culture. I am interested in family, humor,sports, business, politics and the mundane, ridiculous things in life.

July 2nd 1941 Joe DiMaggio extended his hitting streak to 45 games breaking Willie Keeler’s record on his way to his historic 56 game hitting streak. 

In 1991 the NY Times printed the box score of every Yankee and Red Sox game from 1941 season.  Teddy Baseball (Ted Williams) only hit .406 that year, the last time anyone hit .400.  Oh yea, after Joe D went hitless in the 57th game, he went on a 16 game streak.  I followed that 1991 coverage as if it were live.

I was going to make a post about my horrible golf swing but I just watched Casey Donahue’s latest video “Idea” and now I feel totally inadequate.  Maybe I’ll just have a Johnny Red.

Racing

The great filly, Rachael Alexandra, and the great mare, Zenyatta, continued to dominate there peers yesterday.  Rachael, untouched by her jockey, came from off a suicidal early pace to win by 20, setting a new stakes record.  Zenyatta, carrying 129 lbs., made her usual late run on the outside and won going away.  Please, have these two meet somewhere this year.

Racing

The great race mare Zenyatta (10,starts, 10 wins) is assigned 129 lbs. for the  Vanity Handicap on Saturday.  Watch her if you can.  She is special.  First time in a long time a superior horse has been required to carry weight.  The mighty gelding Forego carried 130 lbs. or more 24 times in his career (mid 1970s).  In the 70’s the great mares Dahlia and TaWee carried 130 or more 8 and 7 times respectively.  Legitimate handicap racing for fillies and mares effectively ended there.  Only Safely Kept (1991) with 130 and Sky Beauty (1994) have hit the 130 lbs. burden since then.  With the number of racetracks declining substantially (thereby limmiting the trainer’s ability to shop for light weight) maybe real handicap racing will return.
